Are Business Cards a Thing of the Past?

Are Business Cards a Thing of the Past?

Are Business Cards a Thing of the Past? Let's begin by defining it. A business card is a little card with information about an organization or its representatives, like name and address. Business cards are so successful because they allow recipients to carry a small portion of a discussion with them. It functions as a kind of keepsake that captures the context, body language, and, of course, the essence of the company. Before LinkedIn and smartphones, networking events could only be conducted over business cards. The business card serves a utilitarian purpose, but it also gives us a chance to...
A Lesson in Sole Proprietorship

A Lesson in Sole Proprietorship

A Lesson in Sole Proprietorship The quickest and easiest way to launch a one-owner company is through a sole proprietorship. Whenever you start a business, you become a sole proprietor. It is the best approach for newly self-employed individuals to get started because they don't need to submit federal or state forms and have few regulatory constraints. It is not a corporation. It simply means that the owner of the company is liable for all of its debts personally. A sole proprietorship may conduct business under its owner's name or a made-up name, such as Rita’s Crab Hut, Yummypicks Food...

What is a D-U-N-S Number?

What is a D-U-N-S Number? (The Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) Number) The DUNS system was developed in 1963 as a method of business identification by Dun & Bradstreet. DUNS numbers quickly rose to prominence as a crucial part of Dun & Bradstreet's business credit reporting system. About three decades later, DUNS became the accepted business identifier for electronic commerce with the federal government. Large corporations, small family businesses, non-profits, and other organizations use DUNS today. The U.S. government also mandates that all vendors and recipients of federal grants have a DUNS number to receive services from the government, such...

Intro to Series Limited Liability Companies

Intro to Series Limited Liability Companies

Limited liability is a benefit offered by the business structure known as an LLC (Limited Liability Company) to business owners and property investors. This corporate structure protects owners from personal liability for business debts and lawsuits. An ordinary LLC creates a barrier of restricted responsibility between the LLC and its owners; business owners cannot normally be sued for their business debts. However, a series LLC creates limited liability barriers between distinct divisions of the same LLC, which means that one division cannot be held liable for the debts of the other. A "parent" or "umbrella" LLC and one or more...
Pass Through Deduction

Pass Through Deduction

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) is a tax reform package passed by Congress in December 2017. It made sweeping changes to the tax code for both individuals and businesses. One of the most significant changes for most taxpayers is the Qualified Business Income deduction, which allows certain business owners to deduct up to 20% of their qualified business income. The Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction applies to businesses that are organized as pass-through entities such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLCs, and S corporations. This deduction allows these businesses to deduct up to 20% of their qualified business income,...

University students have begun to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in many different ways in their undergraduate education, some beneficial to their learning, and some simply expedient to completing assignments with as little work as possible. Thirty-nine students documented their use of AI in their final course project, which involved analyzing conceptual networks connecting core sustainability concepts.  This exploratory qualitative study examines how undergraduate students used AI in a large General Education course on sustainability and technology at a research university in the United States in 2023.

Through iterative qualitative coding, we identified key patterns in students’ AI use, including higher-order writing tasks (understanding complex topics, finding evidence), lower-order writing tasks (revising, editing, proofreading), and other learning activities (efficiency enhancement, independent research). This analysis provides insight into how students navigate AI uses.
